lorikeet isle

“Whoever you are: some evening take a step out of your house, which you know so well. Enormous space is near.”

  Rilke

The Way In (Rainer Maria Rilke, tr. Robert Bly)
Whoever you are: some evening, take a step
out of your house, which you know so well
Enormous space is there, your house lies where it begins
Whoever you are

Your eyes find it hard to tear themselves
from the sloping threshold. With your eyes,
slowly, slowly, lift one black tree
up so it stands against the sky, skinny and alone

With this you have made the world
The world, which is like a word
still growing in the silence
In the moment that your will grasps it
your eyes, feeling its subtlety, will leave it

I am island / I am only
Islands have drawn and gathered souls for millenia. Crossing water, a mirror world rises infront of the boat - transporter of souls between worlds - circle,  cir-cum-navigate, cir-come, i-mmerse. I (i -land) Conceived - King, grew - Tasmania, then reluctantly stranded on a larger One.
Now islands small /uninhabited/wild console the island self; I-self
Viola plunged into water and claims domain over an Other world. now reachable through technology
, I claim two ancient vessels, body and boat to navigate my own psyche.

Somehow a 'pre-literate' knowing returns on these journeys. Back to water, wilderness, watery forest, the forest of fairytales - unknown and known.

Then images trawl back the relics for remembering and forgetting

navigations in time light + space : approach+submersion

Navigations in Time Light and Space – Approach and Submersion

The photographic and video works in this series are glimpses of my instinctive response to local watery places; islands, rivers and mangrove swamps around the Gold Coast. They document journeys taken by day and night through the waterways, often to islands .Captured from on and below the waterline, the works map the transitions of light, sound and mood; gleanings from Nature that are often veiled in clear sight by the gloss of the ‘holiday strip’. They works navigate the journeys in a range of ways; as documents of journeys, circumnavigations of islands, real and imaginary; the record of the Otherness of our daily place in the world.

The video footage suggests an abstracted narrative of our approach and submersion into this place. Both documentary and metaphoric, the work uses sound and the experience of the ‘plunge’ to immerse the viewer in an’other’ environment that is not only physical, but also psychological. The places are at once familiar (the Coombabah Lake World Heritage Reserve, Macintosh Island – locale of V8 Super Cars and Indy), but made strange in a confluence of time, light and space recorded from a multiplicity of perspectives.
